Joel NewmanSingBig! Musical Revue 2-Week Summer Camp

Joel is a professional guitarist/vocalist and music teacher with “Duet with Music” in Frederick, MD and “Cumberland Valley Music School” in Chambersburg, PA. He has several recordings and live credits to his name and has performed with Tim Curry, Dr. John & Dick Wagner. Joel has played in New York City and throughout the Mid Atlantic region and is currently playing local gigs with his group, the InsideOut Band. Joel has coached three SingBig! summer camps in 2018,2019 and 2022 and held virtual workshops during the Covid pandemic. SingBig! students receive voice and performance instruction and exposure to numerous genres of music. At the end of the 2-week camp, students perform a musical revue for their families and the public. Many of his alumni have joined other BCMC music programs and mentor new students in their classes.

Susan KirchnerIntroduction to Movement Composition

Professor Susan Kirchner from Towson University brings 35 years of teaching in higher education with 21 years in administration to BlackCat Music Cooperative. Susan is a former dancer with the German Expressionist group from Philadelphia: ZeroMoving Dance Company (1983-1985) and with Moving South Dance Company from South Carolina (1978-1982). She has also taught and toured in Italy, Germany and Mexico.

Professor Kirchner taught at Temple University, University of Maryland, Texas Christian University, Columbia College and Towson University. She created and directed The Children’s Dance Lab (UMD College Park) and supervised TU Community Dance (Towson University). Research foci: dance composition, oral history, modern dance, arts advocacy and connecting communities.

Susan was raised in rural South Carolina and just recently became a resident of Berkeley Springs.
